Incandescent Lamp on-a-Chip?

Incandescent Lamp on-a-Chip?

Just saw this in the NASA Tech Briefs magazine. Apparently its an ultraminature incandescent(!) lamp on a chip. It looks like a typical SMD package ready to solder onto a circuit board. Just thought it was interesting, especially if it truly is incandescent.

Why did they use a SEM for a ~2mm device? That's like using a telescope to look at your feet.

I would expect this to serve as a cathode in some vacuum equipment, of course not in that package...

@Xytrell: That was likely one of the first pictures when zooming into the grain structure...
This shows in the documentation file, what spot you were focusing on in the following pictures, so if the lab technician made a mistake by looking at something else, that error is then easily spotted, so the material engineers/scientists do not loose time by making false conclusions, if such error happens.
And because it looked great as an overall picture, it was selected there...

No more selfballasted c***
