Are those capacitors ?

Are those capacitors ?

Every here and there i see this deice installed on the 24kv electric grid. Dont know what it is for but i guess the blocks around may be capacitors, so might it be some sort of PFC ?

They appear to be connected in delta (parallel pairs) to some box which probably controls them (i dont know how this box knows when to connect/disconnect them though). Behind the box is a cylinder, which is connected between 2 phases. I guess it is a step down transformer to power some control circuit with 240v

I'd assume that the load on the lines is mostly inductiuve, then it would need capacitors for PFC.... It is definitely not lighting related as it is on the 24kv line

To me these are capacitors, HV capacitors for use in electricity distribution systems looks exactely like them. Maybe they're for PFC and/or filtering for suppression of harmonics and other types of interferences over the 50 Hz AC waveform (do you have 50 Hz in Israel right?).

Example

Gimme a discharge lamp and a humming ballast Grin

Thats what im thinking, but what i dont know is this : They are connected through some box, i assume it is a relay to switchem on and off. If hats the case, how does this relay "know" when to switch them ?

Behind the relay is a bucket getting only 2 of the phases, i assume this is a step down trandsformer that feeds the relay control circuit

And yes, its 240-415 3 phase 50Hz for low voltage, 24kv in the north / 36kv in the south for high voltage residential distribution, 160-400kv biggest high voltage lines. All residential transformers are 3 phase on the order of 320-630KVA with delta on the HV side. Only controls of the grid itself (wirelessly controllable switches etc) are powered by single phase transformers, those are connected beteween 2 phases on the HV side

they are capacitors they put these on lines that are prone to dips in the voltage

Nearly all pole-mounted capacitors like this are solely for power factor correction, what a lineman once told me. Harmonics filters are only installed within the "distribution switch substations" and never on utility poles. And a bank of capacitors like this services about 25,200A of residential load (or about 126 homes).

when people were complaining about the power dipping every few seconds on the jacks bay feeder. we installed 8 banks of 3 caps on the 11000v feeder . but after seeing fluorescent light capacitors explode I hated putting the d.d.os in to liven up the capacitors

I saw something similar at a local nhood and googled. In my area they're for mainly PFC.
