Unusual for MH lamps, these start like a switch start fluorescent, i.e, they flash into life!, you can just see the tube here and its protective shield.

These CMH retrofits, have an internal glow starter in the base, thats why they starts like a switch start fluorescent. Is this lamp glows red during ignition (These have neon-argon penning gas)?
What is the hot restrike time of this lamp?

I've managed to switch start one and have a video clip somewhere of it. Took a few blinks but it eventually kicked straight on.

What if I told you you could save 100% of your street lighting budget? Don't believe me? Buy an LED street light and run it for a week. the results will leave you in awe. (Aaaaaaand maybe wondering why you swapped that 70w SON)

I suppose you could try starting a number of HID lamps using a fluorescent starter switch?, like you say, by just causing repeated inductive collapses in a ballast winding?

Here is a picture of an EOL SON-E/I 70W, which behaves exactly like EOL T8 on switch start. Now it is don't works anymore.
