Strange fluorescent light.

Strange fluorescent light.

I have no idea what for this light is. It came with 20w uv "innsect lamps" but not sure if those are original.

Basically this lamp part is just two pairs of O-ring sealed moisture proof T12 lampholders clambed together and a tube to run the wiring. There is separate ballast box housing a magnetic ballast and the starters. This seems like a temporary light meant for outdoor use or something.

I've seen similar fixtures, but not portable ones. I think they were used in hazardous areas where there is risk of explosion.

I've seen stuff like this in the past - they were sold as aquarium light kits for people who wished to build their own light/cover for the tank.

Most were sold as just the water-resistant endcaps though...and commonly used with rapid-start VHO lamps/ballasts. But you could also get non-VHO rated ones. (full kits & ballast/endcaps were also sold). This was all expensive stuff too!

Wouldn't be too surprised if what you have here is one of those aquarium-light kits.
What did the etch on the original lamps say? Did it actually say 'insect lamp' ? Or did it say 'Actinic' (some of which are used in aquariums)

Colored Fluorescent's such as F40T12 Red or  Green or Blue are awesome...

Here is a picture of markings in lamp holder: http://www.whitenightcape.com/kuv/holder.jpg

It came with these lamps but I don't know did it originally come with these or if someone installed these later: http://www.whitenightcape.com/kuv/lamps.jpg

This might really be fixture for aquarium etc. Still I find it really fancy since it takes T12 lamps and the ballast box in really interesting.

The fixture is not very old, because the lamp holder has ENEC mark.
