2 X 2 Troffer

2 X 2 Troffer

I picked this up for $5 this past weekend at a Habitat Restore. I want to see how it looks in my basement as the finished half of my basement has openings for troffers, but there are shop lights there instead which was the work of the previous owner. It uses T12 bulbs which I like. The other half of my basement which is not finished, has turrets screwed to the ceiling. There are older pictures of those on here.

That's what you call a "troffer."

Cool little piece of lighting history but I hate u-bend lights lol.

Whats with those weird brackets sticking up like that ? I would covert this to use 4 F20 T12s, just need another bracket, or a set that will fit.

Those brackets are what holds the U bent end into the fixture, I'd do an electronic conversion if they dont start- reliably on that ballast

Magnetic ballasts and old school electronic only zone!  No T8 instant start

I never seen a fixture with those, usually they have those little metal tabs. A ballast good for this would be the advance electronic rapid start for 2xF40T12. Still series and still rapid starts

I'm in the same boat as Lightingguy. Never seen a u-bend fixture with holders like this! All the ones I've come across have the basic unpainted steel clip, similar to a standoff conduit clip.

IMO these clips are better since they flex so you dont have to pry the lamp off the clip around the lamp, just pull it out..also they make more contact with the lamp so in theory it should start easier

Hmm yeah seems like these would be better. Is this clip design proprietary/only used by one or two manufacturers? I've never ever seen this design. Granted I don't work on lights every day like you so I haven't seen everything out there. Normally when I deal with lights it's because of a remodel or something and lighting isn't the main reason we're there. I always try to sift through the removed lights for anything good though.

Those clips will affect the appearance of the light when in use. The fixtures Ive seen just have 1 or 2 little tabs. Now of course thats just me, if one doesn't mind the appearance these are good brackets

I think u-bend lamps are ugly anyway so the appearance is already affected for me lol. I think linear tubes look much better. Only time I'd use u-bend lamps is if you can't see the tubes through the diffuser (like an opal/white drop dish lens)

my only beef with U bend lamps is they are more expensive and harder to store, and not made in XL versions

^^ And the ones I've seen don't seem to last as long as their straight counterparts. Not sure if the ones I've seen are just junk but whenever I see an installation of F32T8s and F32 U-bends, there's always more u-bends that seem to not be working. Philips ones seem to frequently go starved. I do like the u-bend tubes better than those 2ft PL lamps though. Those just look silly IMO. I think my distaste for u-bend lamps comes from always seeing F40/U fixtures not working since they have bad starting issues for whatever reason. They're a neat design but I just never personally cared for them.
