You can simply cover the whole wire with a piece of heat-shrink (no need to even shrink it)

And yep the tar dries out/cracks after years of being there...

Colored Fluorescent's such as F40T12 Red or  Green or Blue are awesome...

The shrink tubing I have is not long enough. The next pic over I have completed it. Snipped the wires and soldered on new wires inside and then slipped a thick shrink tube over the joint. I used the kind of tubing with built in heat activated glue to seal it all up tight.

Im hoping the tar being dried up isn't indicated that this ballast is near EOL. So far it works perfectly fine and only got warm to the touch after an hours run

@Lightingguy1994:
You can get long pieces of it on eBay
..but I didn't see the other pic of it repaired til after posting a comment on this one .lol.

With the tar, its probably just age. Only thing being dried out might do is make it a bit noisy.

I get all mine from there, its almost time to shop for more actually , especially the kind with glue in them. This ballast is actually very quiet even though it had been open. Just 2 more to go!

I get most of shrink tube in 4' lengths from a electronics parts place. They also sell the hard to find 18G solid core wire in multiple colours that's used in most fluorescent ballasts.

Yeah think I'll take a look for that stuff too. The shrink tubes ive still got are those multicoloured ones that are about 2 inches up to 4 length and range from very thin to thick.

Ive completed the rewiring of the ballasts. One turned out to be a failure as only one lamp lights on that, the other 2 are great but thats fine as I only needed two anyway. These seem to be from the 40s or 50s so I do think I'll be able to have them in full time use. They are long past their rated life

Thanks for the heads up, they look like fairly modern turrets too. Don't think I'll get them but I hope they'll end up in use instead of trashed.
