These have a halogen capsule that fires immediately when turned on where waiting for them to warm up is objectionable. The capsule turns off when the tube is warm. If you turn it off and on immediately the halogen capsule won't turn on, so I suspect that it uses current draw from the tube to control the capsule.

Nice find, mdcastle

I bet the one without the halogen incandescent light bulb CFL would be a rarer model there.

Pretty, please no more Chinese failure.

I remember when Target used to sell these.

I'm really surprised these actually made it to mass market...the bulb mode switchover is jarring on these as I bought one awhile back just to see what would happen...I like that they are fairly complicated and they are of course now just a interesting novelty.

There's no IC, just a triac which I assume controls the output to the halogen capsule and is in turn controlled by the current going to the tube.

They had these at Dollar Tree a while ago. I wanted to get one, but when I went back another time, they were all gone. The ones they had weren't clear, so you couldn't see the CFL inside like these.

Collect vintage incandescent and fluorescent fixtures. Also like HID lighting and streetlights.

Interesting design. FYI the frosted appearance is created by a plastic lacquer on the glass instead of real frosting. If you wish to see inside, the coating can be removed with acetone to make a clear lamp, or scraped off with a knife. When they were launched, GE made some half coated versions to show the inner construction, which are quite easy to replicate.
