Replaced with what? stupid LEDs?

Any machine is a smoke machine if you operate it wrong enough.

Yuck! Why move from white MHs to HPS?

Why I like LEDs on top of other lighting tech?
LEDs = Upgrade 95% of the applications. (That is if you avoid eBay's LEDs).

LED brainwash? No, people uses them cuz they work well for them.

Why would they do that? The visibility of 1kw MH is probably going to be much better than that of 1kw hps. Plus, white light will also make everything seem more alive at night rather than bland orange.

The installation was aging and needed to be replaced. High Pressure Sodium is more efficient and they no longer need to maintain different parts as this was the last metal halide installation on Minnesota.

Replacing 1000w MH with 1000w HPS is going to do nothing to make the whole setup more efficient. They both consume 1000 watts, so why do they need to change it to HPS?

Longer lamp life - 9K hours MH vs 20..24K HPS, and that is at 50% survival. I gues they relamp more often than that to keep the lighting installation in spec. They didnt like the maintenance overhead

Higher Lumens - 14K for HPS vs 11K for MH (atleast thats how it goes for 230V hemisphere lamps). This may or may not be offset by the light color, depends much on the lighting levels at the road and other geometric properties of the place that affect how the drivers see the light. Generally, in low light levels white light of MH is at advantage, in high light levels the HPS may take it by plain Lumens

Wanted uniform color with some other nearby lights

If the MH were old they were probabnly Probe Start ? Then they wanted to get rid of the supposedly "inefficient" installation

Well the thing is what Ash is saying is that HPS lamps have longer life compared to MH lamps and in return would reduce maintenance and wastage (except the MH lanterns that are being thrown away)

As I remember, most railway stations that I remember visiting around evening they had their existing lanterns relamped to MH from HPS as I guess most stations wanted white light and to me that was the best relamping/retrofit job as I liked the colour of the quartz MH bulbs, some had a high kelvin rating (8000-10,000K)

I will give LEDisease a taste of my shoe

These were originally 1000 watt mercury vapor. At some time they swapped them all out for metal halide which resulted in the area being lit as bright as day, then disabled every other fixture while converting some to HPS. Now the underground and poles are bad so they removed the whole installation and replaced it with HPS poles.

At least they're going to be HPS and not LED; not to mention the service nightmare the LED ones are.
