Very nice ! Would this have been installed on a PC or would it have been an intentional day burner ?

Not to be the devil's advocate, but why do power companies/transportation authorities let lighted signs like this day burn ? They go through the trouble of installing and maintaining individual PC's on street lights in some cities (I know some are group switched but not everywhere). They could install a PC for lighted signs as well. Signs are perfectly readable in very overcast days. I am not singling out any utility as there are some lighted road signs here that day burn intentionally as well, mostly cross walk ones. Most are HO fluorescent but some are MV or HPS. I guess reliability issues are a factor here, as well as legal technicalities...

I agree that having them run all the time is stupid. The lamp won't last any longer. If anything it'll dim out faster. You're thinking of incandescents. HID does not benefit from running 24/7. MVs still last virtually forever running 24/7 but they'll dim out to the point where they're useless (especially 100W MVs).

IMO, with the advent of highly-reflective traffic signs, lighted signs are obsolete and just a waste of energy, though they look cool.

I suppose in an extreme case some stray headlight beams could hit the PC and turn it off but with some Afro engineering that could be avoided.

Ah I see. that makes much more sense. Well, with the conversion to reflective signage or LED back-lit, at least you were able to save this classic.

One of the local contractors has a coffee table in their lobby made out of a large 4-way case sign.

How big is this sign ? If it isn't too big, you could replace the translucent part with a new panel with your house number, and have a lighted house number sign ! Of course, a photocell would make sense here.

I would like to make a sign similar to this, backlit with 100w MV, and it would be a sign saying "the egg factory" for on my chicken coop. Of course, wood would be the only option, and I don't think that it is going to last long without catching fire and burning down the whole building.

Just a question-where did you get this?
