Got this Glo Fish 10w blue CFL on clearance from Walmart for $3.50, and once I opened the box, the bulb came broken! >:-( Damn it! Might as well throw it in the trash, and probably find another one that's not broken.

I wish all coloured CFLs were like this, where it uses actual coloured phosphor rather than crappy painted glass. Sorry yours came broken, if you go for another, check the bulb before buying

I'd try to take it back, Walmart is usually good about returns, I exchange a 2 pack of Sylvania 75w equivalent LED's because there was only ONE in the package, they just said "go get another"!

Even if they won't exchange it, it is "not the end of the World" ...it still has a use, just that you don't realize what that use is?

Chemically, you can remove the phosphor and study it ...(It is probably pure Calcium or Magnesium Tungstate with no dopant ions in the lattice).

Electronically, you can remove the impedance converter in the white polymer housing, draw its circuit and make an attempt to discover how it works.....so, actually...if you LEARN something from it...anything at all, the $3.50 was not spent in vain, but actually well spent!

There are other things too...like the tube seals...are they red Dumet wire or some silver coloured alloy?

Where is the tube exhaust tube?
Is it a Mitchell and White type setup (Look on the right hand side of the picture at the other end of this link) or is is a simple tabulation between the seals?

There is quite a lot you can discover from a broken or faulty lamp
