Ahh man to be honest I like the way this looks alone without the diffuser. Plus, the tubes
are much easier to get to this way. This is very unique |

I can only wonder if there was lighting enthusiast involvement in setting these up. lol
These all look to be high power factor.... that's my guess. Even those F20's |

@Sol, do you mean the caps? If so, those look green to me... at least the 4 foot lamps. |

With diffuser panels and high-CRI lamps, this could actually be pretty nice, I think. |

I wonder if this originally had a diffuser 'false' ceiling originally. The industrial look doesn't really match the fine cabinetry, but I guess some people like that combination...
The way they are hung on the ceiling and the holes in the ceiling lead me to believe this might be the case. |

I agree... this more than likely had a diffuser type of ceiling. I've never, ever seen a kitchen with this kind of set
up, and this many lamps. |

The cabinets appear to be fairly new. The ceiling and lights might be the last step of a renovation, although it is usually the first thing in order to prevent dusting up new cabinets with ceiling work. |

My kitchen has similar lighting, but has a 2x2 grid to hold diffusers. I agree that this would had originally had a diffuser and probably a T bar grid. |

@Joseph_125, is your kitchen lighting exactly the same as this? Or is it a couple fixtures here and there?
If your kitchen lighting is basically the same as this, I wonder if there are a lot of homes out there with
this kind of set up? |

Yep...last i checked, tube guards are required in food preparation areas if the lamps are open to possible damage. (Troffers and wraps etc. are excluded, due to being enclosed.) |
|
|
|
Your mission, should you choose to except it, is to save unique and rare HID lighting before it's all scrapped.

I just realized that the ceiling in this pic is a vaulted ceiling. My living room in my apartment has a vaulted ceiling... this is a set up that would
look genius in my living room as well, if I knew how to do it. |

A nice row or two of louvers would be fantastic in a vaulted ceiling area...just like my old school back in the day, the classroom had ceilings like that |

Ahh yeah just like my old school as well, also back in the day. (Elementary) Basement classrooms were 1st-4th grade,
with flat ceilings and rows of 5 two lamp louvered from the left and right, and 1 row of 4 in the front of the classroom.
The upstairs classrooms were 5th-6th grade with the same set up of louvered fixtures, but with a vaulted ceiling and 2 ceiling fans.
1 at the front and one at the back. Low ceiling to the left, and extremely high ceiling to the right. I loved that look.
All of that is gone now... covered with lowered ceiling tiles (not vaulted) and two lamp T8 troffers. The school looks completely
different inside, sadly. |

Yep...last i checked, tube guards are required in food preparation areas if the lamps are open to possible damage. (Troffers and wraps etc. are excluded, due to being enclosed.) Yep that is true - for any sort of business - I don't know about people's houses. (even if it is code, as long as you weren't selling the place, there would be no issues .. a business that does any sorta food-prep on the other hand, the state/county/city health inspectors will stop in un-announced to do inspections.)
-------------------
I just realized that the ceiling in this pic is a vaulted ceiling. I was thinking those chains on the right side looked shorter, but til you pointed it out, I didn't actually notice it was vaulted.
------------------
Most here probably won't agree, but I think that that entire kitchen is hideous |

The lighting enthusiast side of me absolutely loves this kitchen set up... but even though I do think
this is unique in it's own way, I agree with Xmaslightguy. This kind of set up just doesn't seem right
for a kitchen. Especially not with cool white halophosphate lamps. CW halophosphate is my favorite
kind of fluorescent by far, but having it in a setting like this... nah I don't much agree with it.
It'd be a little better, but still questionable, if these were Warm White. (And when I say questionable, I
mean keeping this set up in the first place.) lol
A finished basement, or garage (especially with a vaulted ceiling) would be excellent for this, at least to me. |

My old school still has the vaulted ceilings but the louvers are long gone. There is just rows of single lamp wraplights in the same config as the louvers were.
As for this kitchen, it looks awesome but personally i think it has too many fixtures for the size of room and also it is not correct to have exposed lamps in food prep areas.
My collection of fixtures is mostly 90s wraplights so i would have put a row or two in there on stem mounts. Louver would be good for a living room. |

My high school got the same thing your school did... they didn't add the ceiling tiles, but they took down the louvered
fixtures, and replaced them with 1 lamp 32 watt T8 wraparounds, with reflectors. The only rooms that didn't get the
conversion (don't know how things are now, more than 12 years later) were the main offices, and the detention room. The
detention classroom was still completely lit up with louvered 2 lamp rapid start and T12/magnetic.
Things more than likely have changed now, but it was nice to see they didn't screw up the detention room. lol |

Interesting to see single lamp strips, especially in an installation with this many lights. Usually see 2-lamp strips everywhere. |

These are definitely still in series with each other though... at least the F40's. You can tell with the EOL lamp and
the one next to it also out, despite no sign of EOL. |

These (ceiling-mounted ofcourse - no chaiins) would look great in a garage or shop, or even some sorta work-room Same goes for those white cabinets - shop/garage/laundry-room ... but not kitchen
I'd still want fluorescent for the kitchen, but something like this with that vaulted ceiling would be tough. What I'd really want is to do something slim (like T5's) and recessed in the ceiling.
All we have in our apartment kitchen is a 2-lamp 8’ fluorescent light strip with no diffuser just bare tubes I have never seen an 8-footer in an apartment .. usually its some crappy incandescent thing, or a 4-foot wraparound fluorescent.
At one point I had a 2xF96 HO strip in the kitchen (wasn't even mounted straight with the walls) ... but it was only there while I was working on gutting/remodeling ... once it was close to time for drywall that 'big ugly beast' went away |
