They say not to operate if the envelope is broken. If that happens, won't the lamp go out as soon as the filament burns up (usually quickly) ?

You cannot operate any mercury vapor light if the outer envelope is broken. The outer envelope is made of ordinary glass which blocks dangerous shortwave UVC from the arc tube. Some MV bulbs self-extinguish if it is broken as a safety measure.

I think it is intended for both Blacklight MV and Blacklight self-ballast MV here

Pretty, please no more Chinese failure.

I could simplify those instructions to one sentence - "Plug in and switch on"

Although one other thing on that sheet puzzles me, "Do not use for catching fish"

Why would you try to catch fish with it ? And it also says not to paint the lamp , WHY WOULD YOU PAINT IT ? Truthfully, I think these instructions were meant for well, people who aren't very bright !

That is an odd one (and honestly if fish were attracted to the light from it, why not get yourself some new pets) .. but seriously the only thing I can think of is someone might try dunk it *in* the water

Yep. That. And probably every one of them has been done, then said 'not bright' owner tried to come back at the company...

Colored Fluorescent's such as F40T12 Red or  Green or Blue are awesome...

These operating instructions on American HID lamps, are completely BS. I've two Osram HWL 160W and one Philips ML 160W, neither of them have operating instructions.

I"m don't speak English well, and rely on online translating to write in this site.
Please forgive me if my choice of my words looks like offensive, while that isn't my intention.

I only working with the European date format (dd.mm.yyyy).

I lives in Israel, which is a 230-240V, 50hz country.

The title of the instructions page says nothing about BLB lamps so this same page would be included with all Merc lamps from Eye

The number of "hack" applications into which ordinary Merc lamps have found their way is remarkable. I mean, hacks that actually work and therefore peeps keep doing them, but can turn dangerous if something goes wrong. And this explains some of the warnings :

Painting the lamp - you can get away with painting lamps in many cases. Here is place to remind of the "Caution Yellow" lamps used for crosswalks in Britain in the 60's, which were painted MBF lamps (those were painted from the factory, but it would work with any paint that doesn't melt at the temperature of the lamp)

Fish - they are attracted to light. I betcha there are fishing guys out there that use the lamp for fishing (with a generator in a boat ?), have been doing this for generations for as long as the mercury lamp exists (this is the sort of know how of the trade that pass from father to son), and their grandfather had been doing that with the incandescent lamp before them

Operating the lamp in broken condition - Just open Youtube and check any of the "howto disinfect room" videos available from any country in any language

I guess atleast half of whats on the page (didnt read) is things peeps actually do and usually get away with

Now, there are those who attempt or even regularly do such hacks and are careful, but then there are the few that will try the same things but make a huge stink if and when what they try fails

Since the manufacturer cant (And shouldnt) somehow magically prevent either of them from doing hacks with the lamp, the best they can do is print this fig leaf...

No matter how well you try to "idiot-proof" something , Somewhere there is a bigger idiot who will do something you never imagined possible !
