Since my dad would not let me convert the post top light to mercury vapor, I plugged my ballast box in series with this lamp.

Don't you think MV doesn't put into regular socket due to temperature of this lamp that cause to melt into docket to destroy the lamp?

I don't think it's too big of a concern. Incandescent lamps radiate most of their heat as IR but mercury lamps don't and so they build up heat. Still, 50w isn't that much in a lamp like this.

Any machine is a smoke machine if you operate it wrong enough.

You are not the only person who convert to HID table lamp. Here is one I used at 23W CFL and 100W MH
