Sketchy Ballast Setup in a SAD Light.

Sketchy Ballast Setup in a SAD Light.

This light for seasonal affective disorder has a electronic ballast for F72T12/HO, but it is being used to run FT55 lamps. I have no idea if this is running the lamps within their specifications, but if I were to hazard a guess, I would say it doesn’t.

The FT55/2G11 is designed as a high output version of the FT40/2G11. The 55 watt lamps probably run at around 350 mA. That ballast actually overdrives F72T12/HO lamps, which are meant to run at 800 mA, at 1000 mA, so these lamps are getting WAY overdriven.

Don't be fooLED, T8 IS the worst thing to do to a magnetic T12 fixture.

I think what the “1000mA light output” means is that the increase in efficiency & light output due to the high frequency operation of the lamps is equivalent to if they were run at 1000mA on a traditional magnetic ballast, such as one for a F100T12.

Either way, it doesn’t change the fact that the lamps are extremely overdriven.
