H85A3 Arc Tube Closeup

The arc tube has graded seals to seal the lead in wires through the quartz. The ends have platinum paint around the electrodes, and the electrodes are surrounded by a small cup of glass inside the arc tube.

I just one of these on eBay, is this it? Looks really cool.. probably can run it on a 100 watt cwa with a cap to adjust current. I have a 100 watt “t” lamp, a GE that has an admedium base, I have a few of those oddball sockets in some floodlights and some day I’ll light that lamp up

I don’t think that the OCV of a 100w ballast is enough to strike the lamp. In addition, this lamp has an arc voltage of 250v, while a 100w lamp only has an arc voltage of 135v. The current of this lamp is 0.38a, while the 100w lamp runs at 0.85a. The mismatch between the gear and this lamp is probably too large to fix by adjusting the capacitor, and even then I doubt the lamp would strike.

It would be difficult, but some scientific equipment used these lamps, and you’d be better off trying to find it rather than to risk destroying the lamp.

It’s cool you’ve got admedium sockets. They’re a pain to find.

Ahh didn’t realize this little lamp ran 250v arc value! Just curious why such a high voltage for such a small lamp? Is it because of the starting setup, that coil of wire vs a starting electrode?

Yes. This lamp is identical electrically to the first mercury lamp with a quartz arctube in the US (H3).Since sealing to quartz was accomplished via a primitive graded seal, they didn’t design the lamp with a starting electrode, which necessitated the high arc voltage.

Shortly after the H3 was introduced, the H4 was released. The H4 is the same as the modern 100w lamp, and had a starting electrode which made the auxiliary gear simpler and lower voltage, which made it more commercially successful.

This lamp is a later version intended for scientific equipment.
