160w SBMV Startup

160w SBMV Startup

Self-Ballasted Mercury Vapor (160w) startup. There seems to be no Ne-Ar Penning mixture in these; no pink starting arc - after a bit of the incandescent filament being on, things reach equilibrium and the MV arc starts (and then strengthens).. If you haven't seen one of these (I'm sure many of you have!) the light is very pure white, thanks to the mix of the incandescent filament and the MV arc running simultaneously. The arc undulating is due to the 24fps shutter and 60hz AC frequency causing a beat frequency result.

There is bimetallic strip that preheats the arc tube before striking which you find them in linear fluorescent light bulb with mini gear. That is why you will not find noble gas starting aid inside the arc tube.

Pretty, please no more Chinese failure.

Its cool the wat this US SBMV Lamp works, it completely different than the European version as soon as you swich on a European SBMV lamp they strike the arc immediately as there is NO heating Electrodes, where as the SBMV lamp requires a minimum of 200 volts to work, the US version uses Heating Electrodes which first warms up the arc, then when the Bi Metal Swich opens it forst srikes the Arc with a Inrush Current, and disconnects one side of the Heater Electrode so it acts as a Normal Electrode this then will run up the same way as the European SBMV Lamp.

Quote from the description: "There seems to be no Ne-Ar Penning mixture in these; no pink starting arc"
@michilumin: The lamp should use argon only. No mercury lamp have neon argon penning. There are few model of MH lamps that have neon-argon penning, but they are rare (European Philips HPI-BUS).
The pink glow that you see from several diffused MV lamps during startup, caused by their diffusing coating itself: This coating on the outer bulb, is a phosphor, which correct the low color rendering index greenish color of the plain MV lamp, to white color with better color rendering index. The arc in mercury lamps always glow bluish during startup, but sometimes purple flashes from the argon, may be observed.

I"m don't speak English well, and rely on online translating to write in this site.
Please forgive me if my choice of my words looks like offensive, while that isn't my intention.

I only working with the European date format (dd.mm.yyyy).

I lives in Israel, which is a 230-240V, 50hz country.

That's pretty cool to watch start.

Colored Fluorescent's such as F40T12 Red or  Green or Blue are awesome...
