Here I have a sylvania design 50. One of the coolest color rendering tubes I own. I'm currently running it on a 40 watt preheat two lamp ballast. Would like to know the year of manufacture

1997.

I like my lamps thick, my ballasts heavy, and my fixtures tough.

Ok. What do the #s over the name sylvania mean and what does E7S4 on the vertical mean? Always wondered that with the newer sylvanias.

The E7S4 is the date. The "7" is where the year 1997 came from. The 7 could also mean 2007 but if that were the case, (Hg) would appear on the etch as well. And in 1987 GTE owned Sylvania, not OSRAM, so the band of digits wasn't there (and the etch was different). I suppose the 2017 lamps will essentially be identical to the 2007 ones though unless there's another etch requirement added or they leave the USA or do something else to make the etch different. The numbers above the SYLVANIA are just a serial code AFAIK. Doesn't really have any real meaning.

That sounds about right. I bought a case of these back in 98. Thanks for the info. So E prob means energy efficient. "S4" who knows. Im guessing 4 is april. S may be the day even though theres 26 letters in the alphabet.

E is the month IIRC. Would be May if it is. The S4 might be the assembly line or factory (though I think that's what the V is for near USA; the GTE lamps usually had an encircled "V" opposite end of the etch denoting they were from the Versailles plant)
