Melted E39 socket

Melted E39 socket

I discovered this melted socket in the Unistyle while I was getting it ready for shipping. The lamp was stuck to the tab and almost broke off when I unscrewed it. it's not pulse rated, so could that have something to do with it?

Probably a weak connection to the base tip causing high resistance and hot spot. This is more common with base-up 400w MH fixtures, as those get incredibly hot and corrodes the brass tab and weakens the solder.

Yikes! Yeah the whole pulse rated thing doesn't seem all that important. I've lit HPS lamps from incandescent sockets and nothing happens as long as the lamp is seated firmly in the socket. Anyway, thanks to the internet mogul sockets are easy and cheap to come by. Otherwise common folk like us would find it hard (and expensive) to get mogul sockets. You'd probably have to order one through an electrical supply place and face like a 150% markup.

If it's just the center contact that's beat up you might be able to salvage the center contact off another mogul socket (maybe one that's got broken ceramic) and install it on this socket if they're compatible. Most mogul sockets use pretty much the same parts for the shell and contact.

To resist is to piss in the wind, anyone who does will end up smelling.

I have a pouch of parts from broken sockets I could use to fix it if it's not too late.

I sent along a spare Cooper socket instead. It's in a plastic bag along with the ignitor from that 200w HPS ballast. And yes, I sent the F40T12 preheat ballast too.

Any machine is a smoke machine if you operate it wrong enough.

I think the difference between standard sockets and pulse rated sockets is the spring under the tongue for extra tension so the high voltage pulse doesn't cause arcing and the tongue and shell of the socket is made of stainless steel to eliminate corrosion.
