this is my first ever HID fixture, which i found sticking through a car window in the junkyard, what i never really knew was whether it was a yardblaster or a NEMA, honestly never cared until about 10 minutes ago, what is this? it is 175W MV

NEMA, and an older one too by the looks of it.

I like my lamps thick, my ballasts heavy, and my fixtures tough.

Also i forgot to mention in the description, the thing sitting next to it is another NEMA, the mounting area is cracked and hanging by the steel bracket, also its missing the top photocell and cover for the socket, the ballast still worked though, so i took that out and it is sitting on my shelf with a coated merc in it, the busted one i am stashing away until either i get around to fixing or IDK

That's a real NEMA you got there. If you have money to blow, you can get a new Formed Plastics refractor for it but they are expensive, around $50 for a closed bottom acrylic.

The best part is that you have the tension clamp that holds the plastic bucket to the reflector so all you need is a refractor. Many times the tension clamp disappears with the plastic bucket and then you're out of luck unless you find another clamp (you could make one or find some other way to hold the bucket on but it's a nightmare).

To distinguish between NEMA and yard blasters is easy. If the fixture itself has "ears" onto which you can latch an optical assembly (like this one) then it is a NEMA. If it is lacking such "ears" and you must screw in the optical assembly from the bottom, then it is a yard blaster. A note worthy of mention is that some newer NEMA heads do have the "ears" but also have screw in optics so the "ears" are not used, but it is still a NEMA. You can unscrew the optics and clip on something else.

Another sign is the triangle flange by the slipfitter. NEMAs do not have that flange, so the fixture cannot be mounted directly to a wall or pole, you need to use a mast arm.

Looks like an American Electric but if you take a clear picture of the photocell socket I can confirm that for you. In fact, if it's American Electric it should say so right on the photocell socket.

Not as often as I find yardblasters... infact, I've found more powerbrackets in 400W flavor than I have found NEMA's ... I have yet to drag one of those big things home...

I never find any HID fixtures around here, at least since I've paid any attention. This was a nice find. And you can unclip the reflector and use it with any type of diffuser.

Collect vintage incandescent and fluorescent fixtures. Also like HID lighting and streetlights.

Yeah I'd love a Powr/Bracket with the Astrodome PC socket but the space I have left I'd rather fill with other things.

One of these days when I get my own place.. and a means of transport other than a bike... perhaps I can retrieve a good few of those power brackets... there is like 20 of them.. they are sitting in giant crates basically rotting deep withing a disused structure. then I can distribute them around to yall... I think out of the 20 or so there I could put together 15-17 working fixtures..

Oh boy.... Shipping... Honestly I'm debating whether or not i should just do a road trip instead... As I'm very distrusting of the postal service with those refractor.. I will admit I dragged one home myself and broke it on accident... Did not takr much to do it either... I think packaging cost along with shipping would cost more than Me just driving them to their set destinations.. Plus I get the added peace of mind..

Looks like an ITT/American-Electric top with a Norelco reflector. (After looking again. it's actually all Norelco. I installed some of these in the early 80's.)

I'm not sure about that.. Mike was thinking McGraw-Edison based on the way the PC socket it held in..
Link to below image.

The question of who manufactured this NEMA is still open...

Seeing that picture only confirms that it's a Norelco. I remember those keeper rings holding in the photocell socket in those heads. (You'd break the socket trying to remove it.)

(Sorry, Mike doesn't know everything, and neither does any of us posters/members...we're here to learn from each other.)

Was not saying Mike knew everything. Was simply pointing out the fact that there was conflict between your observation and his. Thank you for confirming the manufacturer of this NEMA.
