The end construction of these two lamps is very different. The one on the left is a new-ish Osram 90W SOX and the right is an old (1972) GEC 90W SOX.

Indeed. But even two current lamps from different manufacturers can be quite different.

Yeah, but GEC used this support on the right for years. This one had a large mica disk which they replaced with a metal on later on. The ceramic tube support became glass shortly before the demise of GEC. I think Osram picked up the market left by GEC but ditched their end support shortly after. You are right even the accountants at Philips replaced their nice metal work with a mica disk but we know the story will end soon with the last SOX being made in a year or so.

It's time to start hording, at least they are giving people a heads up before production ends..

Does anyone have access to wholesale priced lamps at a source they would like to share ? ( yes they are expensive in Canada )

Philips often claims that the dimples for retaining sodium are exclusive to them - but the GEC one on the right also has two mini-dimples around the outer periphery of the U-bend.

Despite the lack of glass insulator for the left support, I actually prefer that one. Mechanically it is incontestably superior on nearly all aspects, when combined with the more intelligently shaped glass dome. Note the four small leaf springs that extend upwards from the plate and contact the flattened glass shoulder. These provide excellent cushioning of the fragile arc tube and absorb thermal expansion. The downward-pointing fingers that contact the sidewalls of the outer jacket have thoughtfully placed dimples in the metal which avoid sharp edges of the metal tabs scratching the glass inside. And lastly, the so-called ring moulds at the end of the U-bend serve as excellent sodium reservoirs to maintain more constant lamp voltage and long life.

Yep, we must try to get as many SOX lamps as we can, id ideally like at least 3 lamps per each of my SOX lanterns, certainly for the smaller 35w units anyway.

There are a few sellers on eBay with boxes of a dozen or so used 35W SOX lamps for around £20 or so, but without seeing exactly what I'm getting I'd be somewhat reluctant to spend. New SOX lamps are going for anywhere from £20 upwards, depending on size.

I am tempted to get one of those because even a lamp with only a couple of thousand hrs left is better than no lamp for a lantern.
In collection use even a nearly dead lamp would last a long while as my lanterns dont get fired up very frequently.

That's a valid point, I might consider it. However I am at the moment extremely dis-chuffed, as a Beta 5 (!) lantern I bought from eBay has just arrived with the fastening clip broken, half the control gear missing and a suspect lamp, grrrrr...

That's a pity
Got any photos of it?
I assume it has a plastic clip, what control gear components does it have missing?
I have had a poor condition beta 5, fortunately its clip was ok and its bowl looks brand new but the ballast and ignitor were held in with hot glue! Which has come unstuck and there were wires pulling out of terminals etc too.
The gear tray was rather rusty as well so I re painted that and re wired it completely and put the gear in with nuts and bolts!

Not got any photos yet but will take some, it's going back as it was advertised as "used" rather than "not working for parts" as is the rule on eBay. It looks like the ignitor is there, but it's had its wires pulled out and there is no ballast or PFC. If it had been advertised as not working then I wouldn't have bought it. To be honest I think the guy selling it didn't know what he'd got. He does have some more though so I'll try and get a replacement, if that doesn't work then I'll open a dispute. Hope it won't go that far.

It's disappointing, but in 15 years of using eBay it's only the 2nd or 3rd time something I've bought has been broken.

Yes that's not good, which seller is it?
Was it a Thorn ignitor btw?
Hopefully the seller will replace it for you, maybe he might let you keep the broken lantern for spares.

I bought a box of 10 of them used 35w philips soxes when they were £10 for a box Apart from one arriving completely obliterated, another one with loss of vacuum in the outer jacket, the other 8 are absolutely spot on they are mainly 2014 lamps apart from one that was 01/17 and are still clear around the Cathodes and are not bright red on start up

Due to the price and healthy newish condition of the other 8 i never thought it was worth saying any thing about the other two and left him a good feedback as he communicated well

However others have bought them too with no reported issues one person got box of 2016 lamps!

So id 100% say that they are worth the buy!

I got two new boxes with new SOX 35W lamps for free!
One box of lamps is from 2004 while the other is from 2007. I'm quite disappointed seeing how the quality decreased on the newer lamps. One even wasn't evacuated properly as the getter mirror oxidized. Also the mica-discs at the base side are warped in all of the lamps.
So I wonder how good the lamps are from the recent production? Does anybody has experienced such new lamps?

The modern philips lamps for atleast the last 7 years have been hit and miss with life. Some last a year or two before going EOL , some rupture the arc tube and go black but others happily run for 8 or 9 years or so
