Antique Fixture In Stairwell In My Former School Buliding

Antique Fixture In Stairwell In My Former School Buliding

Click to view full size image

Here is a fixture with an outer brass shade fitter that takes 4 inch opening globes and the globes would had been 10-12 inches in diameter. It has an pony cleat porcelain socket centered in fitter with both fitter and socket attached to a longer fixture strap. Some of these fixtures may not use a strap, where both pieces may be screwed directly to the ceiling especially if K&T wiring been used. This is at the former Mingo Community School ( now Colfax-MIngo) in Iowa. There is rumors about the fate of this building may come down or the town may purchase it and hopefully it be renovated for community use. The main building is now 100 years old and newer section with the gym is about 50 years old. That part was built in 1967-1968. Became middle school after consolidating with Colffax a few miles away starting with the 1985-86 school year and used for middle grades or junior high.

Hope they can save the building and find a use for it.

The original town school building here, a 1934 art deco building, was a school from 1934 until the mid-70s, than a school district admin building for another 15 years, than unused. The city needed more space for administrative offices, and bought the building in the mid-90s and moved city hall into the old school building.

Kinda hoping on that one icefoglights. it's up in the air and the school district really doesn't have a need for anymore ad sending everyone to colfax. Hoping the town of Mingo find some use for it. One of those fixtures with pony cleat socket, likely an Bryant was over an old fire escape exit and had at one time an red glass globe to mark the exit on an older fire alarm system. The escape steps were old and not safe to walk on and had been taken off the building back around the 80s. Bet the district or someone got that globe that was by the girls bathroom I was looking for that if it still been there which was back when I was in school.

Long live the great old 20th century quality in electrical & lighting products!

I doubt it can be repurpopsed as a school as there is a 99% chance mostly everything in it is asbestos unless it is deemed a historical landmark. And for it to be a school has to follow safety and EPA regs. Most schools turn into storage buildings for the district for extra desks, books ,etc. Sometimes they get renovated into apartments, depends on the housing market. Most turn into office space.

I collect exit signs, preferably vintage ones.

I also have a little bit of a thing for light bulbs, too. Of course, hoarding them due to the incandescent bulb ban.

It likely won't be used for classes anymore, it seems a stronger chance of demolition said heard from more people, which is up in the air. The trophy cases with original sports trophys got moved to the town's public library and and gotten cleaned up and restored and all the yearly class graduation (1920 to 1985) pictures that are in good sized picture frames also got save at that library. The town is only 300 in population and I'm not sure what's going to happen to the gym area since that part built about 1968 and there was another building much older that got torn down in late 90s that housed the old lunchroom and 1st and 2 nd grade classrooms.

Long live the great old 20th century quality in electrical & lighting products!
