Must be doing something right... Was at a restore on the way home from a family trip (somehow talked the wife into letting me stop) Found this on the top shelf and were marked 0.99 EACH. I was glad to pay for all 12 at that price. This store also had a bunch of Universal 213 ballasts for 4' or less slimlines which I brought home.

This lamp can use 220V 50Hz 110W 1.25A HID ballast start up it?I'm a Chinese,if I use 118-120V standard ballast start up it,and I need a 220V to 110V LARGE POWER TRANSFORMER,That's SO TROUBLE!!!

@Men of God: It may work. I'm not familiar with 110W HID lamps. What type of HID is it? The important thing would be matching the arc voltage. 1.25A is probably close enough to the 1.5A required by the F90T17, but it's important that the arc voltage is close as well.

It took some digging, but I finally managed to find the arc voltage of a 110W HPS here. It's 100V. An F90T17 has an arc voltage of 65V, which isn't a good match and would likely overheat the HPS ballast. The 110W HPS ballast would be a better match for an F48T12/VHO lamp, which has an arc voltage closer to 100V. It would also be good for an F48T12/PG17 Power Groove.

Why F90T17 arc voltage so low? It's possible to use standard ballast?

The low arc voltage is due to the krypton fill but I don't know why it was designed that way. F90T17 ballasts do step up the voltage from 120V.

They don't do terribly well in the extreme cold. I'm under the impression the F100T17s performed better but there's virtually none of them left in existence to test that theory. I suppose it was the best they could do with the technology they had. These T17s were revolutionary in the 40s. I don't think there were many other tubes that produced that much light. Fluorescent technology has come a long way. It's too bad they didn't take the T17s along for the ride. They were only discontinued by GE recently but I don't think really any design improvements were made to them in the 70 years they were made. A triphosphor T17 with longer life was probably possibly by the 90s but there's so few of these fixtures out there I'm surprised they even made the tubes as late as 2014-ish.

Interesting.. with 65v, seems it would be close to possible to fire one of these up with a simple choke ballast even on 120v
If I had a bunch gotten cheap, I'd have to do some tests

I wonder if in a 240v country you could just put 3x F20 chokes in parallel?

Colored Fluorescent's such as F40T12 Red or  Green or Blue are awesome...

They are hard to fire on proper get when cold or after being stored/not used for a while. Seems to be worst with the GE Daylights though. The KenRad and Sylvania tubes I got from Austin are awesome!

I know of a couple people who have fired up F90T17s this way using 4 (full power) F20T12 Chokes in both 120V mains and on 240V mains voltage countries

heres the member that did it with 240V mains http://www.lighting-gallery.net/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-71080

so indeed if you lack the proper ballast to drive an F90T17, 4 full power (its important they are full power) F20 chokes in parallel will drive one quite nicely

My other hobby is buses, especially the Routemaster

I am still not thrilled with the F90T17s. I do not use mine enough to keep them "run in" so they are not reliable starting.
