Westinghouse OV-50 Differences

Westinghouse OV-50 Differences

Click to view full size image

Here you can see the differences between the split-door OV-50 (lower) and the 1-piece door OV-50 (upper)
the housing appears interchangeable, mounting locations appear similar (other than holes for the fin )
The sockets are completely different , The split-door socket isn't adjustable and the bracket is different.
ballast mounting and upper latch assembly are different
Slip-fitter plates : split-door are cast with stainless bolts whereas 1-piece door are stamped with plain steel bolts
The lower door assembly on the split-door is thicker that the 1-piece door.
The capacitors are/were in the fin on the split-door & attached to the door on the 1-piece
BOTH lights are ridiculously HEAVY !

Do you repaint your fixtures? Inside or out or both? I have on the older cobra's and have found high temp barb-q grill silver paint works well for the inside of the fixture. Has been a while and I do not know if they still manufacture that type of paint.

I have painted a couple. I haven't really done anything to these except for cleaning and some electrical repairs to the newer one. the inside of the newer one (1-piece door) has both the back of the reflector and the inside of the housing over the ballast and reflector painted flat black whereas the split-door only has the back of the reflector painted. (I assume to aid in heat dissipation)??

Nice comparison! Without the reflector inside, I can clearly see that these use an OV-25 housing. Never knew they did that! Is it true the M-1000 uses an M-400 housing? I was under the impression those housings were similar in length but the M-1000 was wider?

Anyway, when I repaint lights I do the inside and outside but I only repaint the lights if they're in really rough shape.

I've actually tried it and YES, a M-400 & M-1000 appear to be the same housing, I actually put a M-1000 door on one of my M-400's and it fit perfectly and even latched ! I'm not sure if all the bosses and mounting holes are there , but the doors fit.

Oh wow that's really cool! I wonder if the same it true for the AE 25 and 327 as well. I'd eventually like to get an OV-50 or M-1000. I don't have room for both right now though.

Wouldn't surprise me, I've heard the Unistyle 400 & 1000 are the same way also (Can't confirm that though )!

Hmm it's not really that surprising since I'm sure they would like to streamline their parts to cut down on costs. But to think I've gone all these years not noticing it!
