What happened to the outer bulb?
It looks very nice and with a lot of mercury in the arc tube.

Stan, do you know if this lamp was actually made by Crompton? I think the arc tube looks similar to BTH, but the mount on the stem is unusual and of different style than the BTH lamps I know. Shortly before the Crompton-Parkinson factory closed recently I visited them and talked with the oldest engineers, who advised that although they had made medium pressure MA mercury and low pressure fluorescent tubes, they had never made quartz mercury lamps. Those were always bought in from other factories. But since the style of arc tube mounting is so unusual here, I wonder if he meant instead that Crompton bought in just the arc tubes, and still did the sealing into outer bulbs at their own factory? Now that the factory is closed and all engineers are retired or out of contact, it is difficult to find out whether or not Crompton actually did mercury lamp outer-jacket sealing itself!

Even in this state, this is a significant lamp. James, your questions are very valid and I'd love to know its precise history too!

Manufactured articles should be made to be used, not made to be sold!
