Turrets everywhere!

Turrets everywhere!

Spotted at Ollie's in Anderson, SC. I could hardly believe my eyes seeing such an awesome fluorescent install in 2018. You can see where part of the store was converted to T8 with retrofit kits, but this section was left alone and is still T12! I think it was actually a separate store at one time and they knocked down the wall separating the two.

Wow! the single lamp retrofits look pretty dumb lol. I agree with you on it looking like it was two separate suites at one point. Cool that they didn't retrofit the other side when they took it over (unless they took over the T8 side after it was retrofitted...)

Please check out my newly-updated website! McCann Lighting Company is where my street light collection is displayed in detail.

Quality lighting here. Easy. And the T12's look way brighter than those T8's, although those T8's are quality too compared to LED.
No LED in sight in this picture... this is refreshing.
But I gotta ask... what are those black things on the side of each Turrets? Are those starters?? (Doubtful, but I've never seen
those on any fixture before) I'm guessing all of those T12 fixtures are Slimlines

I've been to an Ollie's store near here. They took over half an old Publix store and changed practically nothing about the building other than dividing it in half. This was a nice find.

Collect vintage incandescent and fluorescent fixtures. Also like HID lighting and streetlights.

Anything other than T12 or T17 is garbage in my book. Twisted and evil are those that decieve to make T12 look bad and make T8, led look better than they really are. What led installation can match the rugged quality of these turrets. Led fixtures are so flimsy they can hardly hold their own weight. I have a F90T17 fixture that was cut down with a torch and fell 50 feet. After a few minor repairs it is working today. Ill pay 60 bucks for a T17 lamp before I would give 5 for a led retrofit.

How about a LED retrofit that's in T17 diameter? Jk.

I think they might be fuse holders. Can't be disconnect switch for relamping since usually one of the sockets (usually the fixed one) acts like a switch for the power feeding ballast. Why would a "quality" set of T12 lighting need fuses whilst the "inferior" T8 lighting doesn't I have no idea. (I have a theory but I shouldn't say anything lest it offend other members. )

Why I like LEDs on top of other lighting tech?
LEDs = Upgrade 95% of the applications. (That is if you avoid eBay's LEDs).

LED brainwash? No, people uses them cuz they work well for them.

I agree with streetlight98, those T8 retrofits look totally stupid in these fixtures.
If they had instead gone with F96T8, that would been a nice/good upgrade!

@FGS:
I think you might be right on those things being fuse holders..I have seen fuse holders which look sorta like that.
If they are, nice bit of added safety

Wow, impressive to see something like this these days. Hopefully they stay around for a long time.

It would be nice if the admins would tell us exactly what happened instead of being all hush-hush about it. Just sayin'.

The T8 side had been retrofitted before Ollie's took it over. In fact, it's been T8 for probably 10-15 years, at least. I'm not sure what the things on the sides are, but they're definitely not starters as the 8-footers are Slimline and the 4-footers are RS. Also, the T12 side of the store is definitely brighter.

I like my lamps thick, my ballasts heavy, and my fixtures tough.

Ollie's if you're gonna change to LEDs please use LED tubes so these classic fixtures can remain in use as they're awesome.

There's a reason we keep things like this between ourselves to keep the members that are actually misbehaving from being humiliated on the site by other members that may not like them.
As far as the other comments go, I'll remove the offending comments, if you know who the members are that are causing the problems, keep it to yourself and off this site.

@RCM442, how did you deem my comment asking FGS where he had been offensive to any one? There was no ill will toward him or any one else. Man this site is being 7 years old again. Or at the very least walking on egg shells in fear of saying the wrong thing. I mean to have a comment deleted for asking someone where he had been is like being 7 again.

That was a complete accident. Sorry.

Yeah these fixtures are definitely quality, regardless of whether those black things sticking out are fuse holders... heck, those T8's are
also quality too. 10-15 years of usage and still going on strong. Although it's not as impressive as the T12's, that's still pretty good.

Lithonia still makes turrets

According to their -PDF- they are offered in 4 to 8 feet and 1 to 4 lamps. There is no F40T12 offered but they do have F32T8 with program start ( bi pin socket) or instant start (shunted) as well as they offer the slimline and HO in both T8 and T12.

I have 5 of the 4 foot T8 ones from ebay but they were the instant start so I had to buy the proper sockets also from ebay and got them going as F40T12. The quality wasn't as bad as expected and there is plenty of room for Magnetic slimline ballasts and HO ones. The reflectors were thick which was pleasent

If the store wants to save on energy and go one lamp...they just need to order in the socket cluster that takes 1 lamp instead of butchering these with cheap retrofits. Or they can slam a pair of T8 LED in them. Sucks but rather that than see nice fixtures hacked up and it'll at least keep them serviceable

I have (per customer request) converted many old fixtures to T8 and never do anything except swap out the ballast and tubes. It makes a lot more sense, looks a lot better because the place is more uniformly lit and is still efficient. Those "retrofit kits" are cheesie and look like crap. I can swap out a ballast and a pair of tubes much quicker than installing that junk.

I too wish they had skipped the retrofit kits and installed 96T8s instead.

Same here. I have seen some older stores here with a 96T8 retrofit but it seems like most preferred to use the tandem F32 kits and all the newly installed strips were all also F32 tandem. New stores have switched to installing strips with factory fitted LED tubes or purpose built LED fixtures now though.
