M-1000's in Menards parking lot

M-1000's in Menards parking lot

Click to view full size image

The local menards used to be a shopping mall. The parking lot has 6 poles, 2 fixtures on each pole, 12 in total. Some are MH and some are MV. They are well maintained, and whenever one goes EOL it usually gets relamped within a few days.

Wow, I never seen a m1000 with fins, only a westy OV-50. Are you sure this isn't an OV-50?

Nice!!! Usually for parking lots in shopping centers and larger stores the designers like the warm color of phosphor mercury bulbs or MH ones. The color looks more inviting-and renders colors better-easier to find your car!!!

Those are definitely not OV-50s.

I like my lamps thick, my ballasts heavy, and my fixtures tough.

Ah well I've clearly never seen finned m1000s until now. Great spotting, Zarlog.

Six Flags Over Texas has these as well but without fins. Most are from the 1960's. And some are MH and MV. When they die out (they really never do anyway) They're replaced with M400 split doors. The current ones are from the 1980's but I think there's one that's new.

Mercury Vapor and magnetic fluorescents forever!

These are indeed M-1000s. All the 1000W 60 cobraheads has fins. The GE M-1000, the Westinghouse OV-50, and the very elusive American Electric Series 17-000 (currently the Series 327).

How frustrating to see ugly Metal Halide bulbs incorrectly installed in Mercury Vapor luminaires. The bulbs will work; just not last nearly as long as the MV bulbs would.

Aw come on, I think metal halide looks a lot better in these than mercury vapor. Plus, this place maintains their lighting really well and whenever one goes out it gets fixed within a day or so.

Meh, I've done it before...

None of the major brands even make 1000w mercury lamps anymore.

Sylvania and EYE Lighting still do... and I think GE does too. You can still find them online easily.

Philips and GE do not make 1000W MV lamps anymore but Sylvania and EYE Lighting do, so they are still available through major manufacturers. Granted a 1000W MH lamp is literally two times the output at the same cost so in many applications it's a no-brainer.

How much would a 1000W mercury vapor finned GE M-1000 sell for on eBay? I've got several and I'm trying to see if it would be worth my time.

If they are 120v, probably $40-50.

Found a couple GE M-250s that had sold for in excess of $200.00 on eBay.
I wonder why people would be willing to pay that much but yet the M-1000s are only worth $40

Well, those people got ripped off unless they were NOS or something. Also, the size is probably a factor, less people would have the space for these. I'm sure you could find someone who would pay over $100 for one though.

LMI McGraw-Edison made one as well. I only saw them once in California...when I was a teenager back in the mid eighties. They were interesting to see.

They have to be re-ballasted to work properly...they look fine as MH...better that 400W HPS without a socket reorientation. Without a reorientation, the distribution becomes a forward throw, and loses most of its 2-way distribution, due to the very small size of an ET18 lamp in comparison to a BT56 lamp. (I saw this happen a lot in the '80s...1000W MV, retrofitted to 400W HPS...just looked wonky.)

Found one on FleeceBay recently. I don't remember the exact price, but it was around $150. Shipping was around $200. I can't find it now...must've sold or the vendor took it down.
