BIG craigslist score

BIG craigslist score

Click to view full size image

Remember that post I made about the 400w HPS Unistyle 400's I found on craigslist? The seller said they also had "2 similar mercury vapor fixtures with bad lamps". So I went to the store where the lights were and asked to see the lights so I could pick out one to buy. Well, they took me to the back room where they had the pile, and on top of it were these 2 175w mercury vapor AEL 113's. I was shocked since I have always wanted one of these, and I was NOT expecting to get not one but 2 of these today. As you can see, the one on the right has a half-missing NEMA tag, and that one also had a MASSIVE wasp nest inside it. (fortunately no live inhabitants lol) and the one on the right has a filthy gasket. These included 2 EXTREMELY blackened GE 175w /DX lamps, and I have tested 1 so far and it doesn't appear to work (but then again, they are so dimmed out that maybe I just need to let them warm up). Needless to say, I am still somewhat in shock since I was NOT expecting to find these. The place still has the Unistyle 400's in storage (it's a refurbished and used tool store) and so I might go back again sometime. They said the lights in storage aren't going to be going anywhere unless someone buys them all. Also, while I was there, I noticed that the parking lot had LED lights on vintage looking poles. They told me the parking lot was originally lit with the Unistyle lights (they were surprisingly quite knowledgeable about them, even knew the manufacturer and everything) and they were happy with them, until Xcel Energy (who I refer to as "Evil big bubby") came in and told them about a discount for a downgrade to LEDisease and if they didn't they would start getting billed 4% more on power bills. So, they reluctantly took the bait. When I asked about where these 2 came from, it was from a corner of the lot and they had noticed how dim they were but they didn't do anything about it since they just thought they were really inefficient and were always that dim. I told them that if they had tried new lamps they would have been suprised, but of course it's too late now and the LEDs have done the damage. Either way, I now know where I can go if I ever need a 400w HPS cobrahead for $30. (These 2 were $15 each by the way). They have acrylic refractors that are crystal clear (if they were polycarbonate they would probably have turned into peanut brittle by now lol) but the paint is coming off pretty bad in some spots and so they might need to be repainted. But then again, the crappy looking paint does give them a "well-used" look which I like.

Also, I think I found these lights on street view before they were replaced.

These are actually American Electric (AEL is 2003-present, aka Acuity Brands). Nice score! Do they have PC sockets? These weren't that common in MV.

Yep, they have PC sockets but they came with GE shorting caps.

Nice scoops! The unistyles need to be scooped, id like one, since they're the lights that got me into collecting (there were some at a childhood drive in but they were replaced with ledeeze nuts and they didn't contact me again after I contacted them about a year before asking about them if they're downgraded).

The Unistyles are actually a bit larger and heavier than I expected, and since the refractor is so huge shipping it without it getting broken would be a challenge. I would have to ask my parents about doing that first (they said no more streetlights) but if they agree I can do that. Shipping (even with the ballast removed) will probably be pretty expensive (like $35 or so), and you would have to pay me first since I am pretty much broke at the moment (these were pretty much the last of my money).

Could you get measurements on the light (length, width, height, weight) and try to get a quote for shipping? Assume you allow two additional inches on each side for packing materials. I'd have to c about it too, since I'll use bday $ for it, which is around a month away.

They are about 33" long and 16" wide. I picked one up and it was like 30 pounds, but without a ballast it would probably be a lot less.

The big Unistyles are 400W size so they're probably around 3ft long or so and about 40 pounds. Big b@stards for sure. These little 113s are nice and compact compared to those lol. Kinda odd to see 175w Mv lighting a big parking lot. Seems like they were using them as flood lights too, even weirder lol.

@ Lumex: Wow those are actually on the small size then! The GE M-400s were typically around 36" and the OV-25s (pre-boxy shape) were around 40" long!

Awesome find, and a good deal too! I wouldn't mind a score like that! I assume the Unistyles were originally MV and converted?

I like my lamps thick, my ballasts heavy, and my fixtures tough.

Yep, but a LONG time ago. The ballasts in them were vintage Advance ballasts. Some had newer (early 2000's) Sola ballasts and one had a Plusrite ballast.

Cool that they had converted them. Many places using cobraheads don't bother converted since the OEM ballast sizes are almost always proprietary and another manufacturer's ballast won't fit right without modification to the mounting brackets. Often it ends up cheaper to just install new cobraheads. Especially as the fixtures age and fill up with junk. Some lights like the 4th generation Westy OV-15 and OV-25 and the Cooper OVS and OVM had universal mounts, with just two long screws a long piece of U-shaped steel where just about any ballast can fit. It's too bad they're not all that way.
