Philips Alto F15T8 Daylight Lamps

Philips Alto F15T8 Daylight Lamps

Here’s a nice eBay find. These Philips Altos are made in Holland and appear to be somewhat modern with the familiar green endcaps. I noticed the factory icon is a box with a diagonal dash.

I’m planning on using these lamps in my desk lamp because these short December days leave me feeling tired. Seasonal affective disorder is a pretty common problem and high color temperature lights such as these are proven to reduce SAD symptoms. The light quality is beautiful from these daylight fluorescents!

There is a slight flicker that my camera picked up on and these lamps take about 30 seconds to warm up in my manual preheat desk lamp. Closer inspection revealed that these have cathode guards. At 15000 hours, these are rated to last twice as long at the Poland made Altos.

Nice lamps. I had one do 6 years in 24/7 service on a preheat circuit with a Leviton FS-2 (Costa Rica). Yes, a cathode guard at both ends.

Flicker is from the mains frequency not sync with the camera frame capture. Halophosphate tubes.

Daylight tubes have always had a stroboscopic flicker due to the short persistence of the phosphor used.

Preheat and T-12 fluorescents forever! Down with LED's and instant start T-8 fluorescents.

Are those 6500K or 4000K?

I like all kinds of lighting and electrical, except LED.

6500K.

Good quality things are awesome. Cheaply made things are not.
