Wow 310W in one of these behemoths? I thought 400W HPS was ridiculously small for a large cobrahead. Sure, lumen wise it's equal to a 1000W lamp (700 in this case) but the lamp itself looks pretty cheesy in such a large light. I wonder if it uses extensions like someone's 310W M-1000 did on here?

The M-1000 is mine and from what I call see at night there aren't any sort of extensions or anything ! You can see the arc-tube is all the way in the back of the reflector.
The only reason I think they used these monsters is they got a deal on them. When they were first installed I thought "WOW, 1000w lights, really?" then I saw the NEMA tag and thought REALLY!

Pretty rare for 310w. TXDOT also used custom made fixtures, like a GE M400R2 FCO with a M250R2 reflector assembly inside, in 150w HPS. Those are used in underpasses.

Save the Cooper OVWs!! Don't them down by crap LED fixtures!!!

What the... Never ever seen that before! That's really cool! I've only seen the proper full size fco reflector. And of course drop lens. Would like to add a drop lens one to the collection.

That whole street view is really messed up. Go back to 2011 and it's a completely different region. If you zoom out it shows the outline of a completely different region.

Thats because the Grandparkway wasn't built back in 2011.

Wow really? it still wasn't there in some 2013 streetviews I found. I have never seen a completely new freeway constructed like that before, it never happens in my state. Interesting that they didn't use LED streetlight either.

Yeah, they were using HPS back then before the LEDs. The highway was originally built with HPS fixtures, but since TXDOT is using LEDs now, the whole highway is rapidly going to LED.

Ugh I hate it when HPS lights only get a few years of use before being replaced by LEDs. I'm guessing all of them would have still been on their first lamps too.

I don't know about the OVL's but the the OV-50's are listed in the 1979 westy OV-50 brochure as standard order with 700 & 1KW MV, 1KW MH ,310, 400 & 1KW HPS. It continues to say that "other wattage and voltage combinations are available on request"

Possibly, or maybe on their second lamp. I do too also hate it when recently installed HPS fixtures get replaced with LEDs.

The City of Columbus was in possession of ballast kits for HPS. I remember throwing away hundreds of boxes one day when we were cleaning out the warehouse. Foreman told me they used to retrofit fixtures but they weren’t doing that anymore.

When I move here 25yrs ago Alum Creek Drive north of st rte 104 was lit with a combination of OV-15's and Unistyle 175's. all MV, next thing I knew they were HPS. Then about 10-15 yrs ago they all became a mix of Cooper OVZ's and AEL 113's. Now the city is widening the road everything is GONE to be replaced with ???? GOTTA LOVE COLUMBUS!
