Mercury wall pack light

Mercury wall pack light

Click to view full size image

This fixture lights the garden area in front of my living room when I need extra lighting for working in the front yard at night, or for effect. It does have a photocontrol which still works, but I switch it on & off manually. There's another one on the other side of the garage, though I converted it to metal halide. I made the internal louvered shield to help control horizontal glare and direct more light downward, plus it has the side benefit of reducing yellowing of the refractor.

I put the model information above. SKU number at McLendons is 10912600 but unfortunately it's almost twice as much now as what I paid for it. I think the same light is also available under the brand "Designer's Fountain" and of course, there are HPS versions too.

Looks like Designer's Fountain now only has this available in HPS or MH. Maybe one of their distributors still have a few mercury versions left or maybe eBay.

Nothing like the beautiful cool white light of a coated Mercury Vapor lamp and the soothing hum of it's magnetic ballast.

Are these still working as of today?

This one is still working, though I did have to replace the original lamp. I expect the replacement lamp (also made by Caster) won't last long either. At next relamp it's getting a quality EYE lamp.

LOL yeah caster lamps are sorry excuses for MV lamps lol. How did it fail? Did it just quit coming on and just totally out? Or was it cycling or just struggling to start but trying to?

It would be out when the switch was turned on, and after a while would eventually strike. No flickering, just stayed dead for hours and suddenly would light up. Sometimes not at all.

Hmm weird... MH does that sometimes but only for around a minute tops when the lamps are new. Usually stops after the lamps are broken in. Can never tell with those cheaper mercs. They do strange things.
