Tate gallery, London - The SOX Room!!!

Tate gallery, London - The SOX Room!!!

Click to view full size image

Oct 2019. My father went with some friends to the tate gallery in London, where he sent me these pictures! I couldn't believe it, a whole hall lit only by Philips (I think 131w??) SOX/LPS lamps. Being there in person must be great! They must have a lot of spares to keep this going, and presumably the ballasts are hidden in the ceiling. It must be cool being the caretaker and switching these on every morning, the start - up must be incredible.

That’s incredible!, and given the missing anti-vibration clips in the middle of the tubes the lamps could either be 91 watt or 135s?

That’s so cool! I did a light art project with an LPS one time. The monochromatic colorblind effect is unlike anything else

OMG Do we ever have to go there..!

@AngryHorse - Not all 180W lamps have the anti-vibration clips, ISTR only the Philips ones had them..? Our GE one certainly doesn't.

So it does if we ever get there we'll take a closer look and maybe ask. Re. the total lumens, I'd just say 1-2-3 lots

Looks like the installation is for artistic purpose, as with SOX lamps indoor, you can see only B/W, not in color.

I"m don't speak English well, and rely on online translating to write in this site.
Please forgive me if my choice of my words looks like offensive, while that isn't my intention.

I only working with the European date format (dd.mm.yyyy).

I searched up the artist, and they have done similar "LPS rooms" before, I think this is only part of a temporary exhibition unfortunately but it should still be going on for the time being.

Wholly sh*t!!!!!! This was what it took to wake me from almost a decade of hibernation! Once in a blue moon I visit this site, I found it and was actively posting nearly a decade ago until my fiancé left (cheated) and I kind of fell into a depression and drifted from the hobby. About three years ago my dad and I set up a 175 W mercury vapor lamp in my yard as a tribute because of the upcoming ban on the bulbs that did not happen. I will post some pictures when I get a chance. I also still have the Electripak 35w HPS I bought new in 1993 lighting my yard. So I’m still here in spirit. I miss everyone! But anyway, tonight I randomly decided to visit quick as an escape from the Covid craziness and I saw this...and being they are one of my favorite lamps I could not believe this. This is NUTS!!! I dream of a grand gathering of all of us here and I will buy everyone a coffee (or whatever you prefer tea or a jack and a coke etc), I think I last posted years ago in the lighting dreams section, well off to bed hopefully I dream of this place....the electric bill! The beauty! The resulting lumens! The start up! (I love neon signs!!) the ballast hum and the flicker at startup, I’ll take a jack and coke please....

A light festival is held in Finland every year, called Lux Helsinki: https://www.luxhelsinki.fi/en/

In 2013 there was a work of art called Sodium Sun: http://2013.luxhelsinki.fi/teokset-ja-tekijat/#sodium-sun It was made of removed LPS lanterns, models Philips SRS 201 and Finnish Idman. At that time, much of the LPS lanterns was removed in Finland. Unfortunately, I didn’t go see the work of art.

Must be reasonably close to the lamps, no more than 30ft or so away, so has to be above the ceiling.

This is very cool! I was wondering if they hung color artwork in there so it could be admired in monochrome. I would love to spend some time in this room. I once went to an art exhibit where a room was lit entirely F40/Green lamps, and that was pretty insane and painful, especially when one left the room. But this is much better!
