At the same place the CMH downlighter pic was from.
A question about these: I have noticed that, they never seem to have protected bulbs in them. How is this allowed? I could see it being pretty dangerous if a bulb decides to blow...

I've seen these, but in Mercury vapor form, and with a tapered cage at the end by the socket when they were reconstructing the mall.

They might have been MV in MH fixtures. Also, at this same mall, some have coated bulbs. I think they are MH though.

Mercury dont tend to explode - lower arc tube loading, no halides that decompose it. So its ok when they are open. If a Mercury light is converted to MH, they change the gear but no thought is given to protection

MH lantern may be originally with the deep contact pink socket, untill the owner finds out that standard lamp + replacement socket cost less than the protected lamp.....

This one has a protected lamp since the lamp holder is pink and is reserved for such use. A standard enclosed-fixture-only lamp will not make contact with the lamp holder centre contact and the lamp will not light. They are made this way to ensure the correct lamp type is used. An open rated lamp will fit and work in a standard (white) lamp holder but the reverse doesn't work. A 400 watt MH (which this is most likely) when still relatively new is too bright to see the protective glass tube around the arc tube. If you have a wristwatch with a flat glass and dark face you might be able to see the shroud in a reflection of the lamp.

I know these ones were protected. However, at restore, they had one for $25 and it had an unprotected base up lamp in it.

I saw some fixtures like this in a supermarket that was being remodeled, and they had suspended old 2X4 troffer doors below them to cut down the glare!

I was flying out of Charleston back in January, and the airport was undergoing a renovation. Lights like these were lighting the boarding area.

I never realized protected mogul sockets were pink. Never seen one up close. However, I do have a position oriented mogul socket, which is yellow.
