I tried remote ballasting a 35w HPS lamp in this clamp light. It had no issues starting or running. Would it be safe to use this setup long term? it didn't seem to mind the ignitor.

Same as a 150w incandescent, 2250 lumens.

Any machine is a smoke machine if you operate it wrong enough.

I don't see any major issues remote mounting a HPS light, but how long is the cord between the igniter and lamp, because you can go hundreds of feet from a ballast, as long as you use correct size wire, and only about 15 feet from the light to igniter, and your ability to move the igniter closer to the lamp without increasing the number of wires depends on the type of core/coil your using.. Also if the igniter mounted at the remote ballast make sure you have good wire and consider some type of abrasion resistant covering on the wire as the 4kV starting pulse will smart if your holding the wire and there is any problems with the wire (assuming your making it portable type light)

But remote mounting the ballast does make for a nice light fixture that's not big and bulky also the ballast runs cooler and lasts longer...
