LOL I didn't even look at this pic yet, and knew it was a Jefferson! They were the first ballast maker to start making ballasts after GE and Dongan was a player, too, but on a small scale.

Very cool!

I wonder how they knew which side of the ballast was the lead side. I looked at the markings and couldn't see anything that indicated which side this would be used on.

Starting Compensator, good question. Here is a good post here that answers that:

It's a starting aide in HPF ballasts (those with capacitor on one lamp). Basically it bypasses the capacitor for lamp starting.
