Well, I finally got a 50w mercury vapor ballast after years of searching. The seller still has some available here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/MERCURY-VAPOR-50-WATT-ADVANCE-BALLAST-/262851767961?hash=item3d332fae99:g:g3QAAOSw4A5Yoj6m
I already have a magnetic 35w metal halide ballast which runs 50w mercs just fine, so for the most part this will probably be a display piece due to it's rarity. However, it is small enough to fit inside of one of my 35w HPS wallpacks, and so it might end up in one of those. I am actually kind of scared to test it (one, because I am not sure if it needs a capacitor or not, two, because I had a scary dream involving 50w mercs once).

I have the postline version of this. Doesn't require a capacitor.

Nice find.
I eventually need to find myself a 50w MV ballast as well (would love to get one shaped like a 'normal' fluorescent ballast if such a thing exists.)

@Zarlog:
with eBay URL's you can get rid of all that extra crap & just keep the item number, like this:
ebay.com/itm/MERCURY-VAPOR-50-WATT-ADVANCE-BALLAST-/262851767961?hash=item3d332fae99:g:g3QAAOSw4A5Yoj6m

@ Xmas: those are called F-Can ballasts. Unfortunately F-Can ballasts are known for not being as reliable (capacitors fail; most are HPF so even this ballast in F-Can would have a capacitor). They were used most often in indoor fixtures (not high/lowbay lights, but recessed HIDs and other indoor HIDs intended for non-industrial applications like a cafeteria, auditorium, airport, or whatever).

Or, even BETTER, you can use the PROPER coding for a url. Replace the parentheses with "["s: (url=www.url.com)The text you want to appear here.(/url) It really doesn't require all that much effort nor is it difficult to remember. Once you do it a few times you will remember it. If you never try, you'll never learn.

@streetlight98:
I didn't know that on the ballasts.. maybe I shoulda grabbed one of these but seemed a bit expensive for a -used- ballast?
I purposely made my links non-clickable (even if you do use proper coding & make a clickable link, you should still always strip out the extra crap on eBay links)

I'd say it's actually pretty reasonable considering it's a genuine 50W MV ballast (they're pretty hard to source) and the seller claims to have bench-tested every single one (so it's guaranteed to work or you could get a refund). I'll pass on it since I don't have any 50W MV lamps or a use for one right now but looks like a good buy.

Yeah since it includes shipping, it really isn't bad at all
I do have a 50w MV lamp (I tried running it on a F40 ballast since that worked for some of the guys here, but was too underdriven...)
