Metal halide color shifting

Metal halide color shifting

Click to view full size image

These are some lights at my church. There are 8 in total, and they are 175w metal halide (though 3 have clear mercury lamps). The one in the corner has an LED corn cob lamp in it (which actually seems brighter than the rest of the lights since they are so worn and dimmed out) that was installed despite me suggesting that it be converted to 100w CMH. Despite being in an enclosed fixture, it seems to have held up with 4 months of heavy use pretty well.

Oh, I see you noticed the fan. That thing is so powerful it will blow tablecloths off of the tables when it is on.

Yes,like that fan!!!!Be nice on HOT summer days!.Replace that corn lamp with a fresh MH one.The whole system could be brought back to life at lowest cost by simply relamping.Use all one brand of lamp.

Looks like they originally had 16 fixtures looking at the empty box covers on the ceiling. IMO if they do go LED, they should install 16 LED fixtures to cover each box rather than retrofit these, which are not laid out evenly. Plus that looks like a nice room. Those fixtures are pretty utilitarian. 16 nice looking pendant lights with 7000L lamps would create the same light levels but more evenly distributed throughout the room.

There were originally 16 pendant globe fixtures in here, but sometime around 2004 or 2005 they installed these to replace them. When they were new they looked really nice (it was REALLY bright in there too) but as the lamps started to age it didn't look as nice. The reason they want to retrofit to LED isn't because of efficiency or because it's underlit, the custodians just hate having to relamp these since it involves bringing in a big ladder. They did a group relamp a few years ago when they got access to a scissor lift for a few days, but they used rather crappy lamps which dimmed out and color shifted pretty fast.

The problem with that is if they decided to change to LED, it's more than likely that they will be
relamping even more often. lol sounds like they need to relamp these with better MH lamps and MV lamps.

Must've used GE lamps lol. GE's probe start MH lamps color shift big time lol. Those globe lights sound cool. Too bad they didn't just want another 15 years. Assuming the globes were like 300W incandescent or something, they could have just retrofitted them to LED! Or to begin with they could have used big spiral CFLs. the MHs are cool but look out of place in a "finished" area.

Yep, they had those weird goblet shape lamps that only GE made. The globe lights that were originally in here were actually 150w incandescent (pretty much the same as post top globes but in a pendant form.) and they had plastic globes. They still have them in the storage room, they had a brushed nickel finish. Plus, before that, it was pretty underlit in here, plus large CFLs or LEDs would fry themselves in the enclosed lights.

So this place actually had large incandescent globe fixtures? What area of the church is this in...? Is it the Sanctuary?
If so, I'm surprised Metal Halide and Mercury Vapor is the main source of light. As a kid, I was so use to seeing incandescent lighting being the primary source of light in Sanctuaries I've been to, in literally all the churches I've been to with my family. Some had magnetic rapid start interior up lighting though.

It's probably the lobby room where everyone hangs out and has coffee and doughnuts after mass. (Not sure what the name for the room is, but any church I've been a guest at has one of those rooms.)

Well the corncob LEDs will fry themselves in the low bays too so either way it won't make a difference. If they've still got the pendants they should re-install them!

They looked like this right?:

Anyway, this corncob LED has a 5-yr warranty and is enclosed fixture rated. It's also 3000K so it'll compliment the wood of the room without being too warm and drab. It's also rated for 6000 lumens, roughly half of what the 175W MH lamps are rated when new, so with these installed in the pendants, it'll visually look like it did pre-lowbays but it'll be lit like when the MH lamps were new. Might be worth at least bringing up to the maintenance guys. They you'll get six MH highbays added to your collection lol.

EDIT: The one i linked is mogul base. Being 150W I'd assume they were medium base, so you'd need this version.

Yep, they looked similar to that except that they can use the same globes that those outdoor post tops can. The room is actually the lobby room where they have donuts and coffee, lol. (With the clear mercs the food doesn't always look too appetizing). I will probably bring putting the old lights back soon (plus I would love to have 8 highbays lol).
