LED Quartermoon Replacement

LED Quartermoon Replacement

Click to view full size image

Back in 2008, I spotted this dayburning MV quartermoon in Newton, TX. In 2016, I was in the area and noticed the bulb had been broken. Today, I drove by and noticed it had been replaced with this LED fixture. I've seen several such fixtures in the area, but almost always as lease lights. This is the first one I've seen lighting a public street.

This is the Cooper "Steam Iron", known formally as the Caretaker.

I think this looks closer to the quartermoon than other LED streetlights would.

Although there are some LEDs popping up, the area is still dominated by clear mercury

Awesome to hear, especially clear MV! clear MVs haven't been used by the major utilities here since the first phosphor lamps came out many decades ago. Now they don't use any MV lamps... Only HPS. They don't even install LEDs here. If cities/towns want LED street lights they've got to purchase the ownership of the existing utility-owned lights and then execute their own retrofit with their own fixtures and hired manpower. The utility is then only responsible for supplying power to the lights and billing the town for energy usage. The rest of the headache is the town's problem. The utility here has a hard enough time dealing with just electrical stuff so they're more than happy to dump the responsibility of street lights on the cities and towns despite all the profits they make off the lights.

The utilities here don't seem to do much retrofitting. I think as time went on, their new equipment moved along with it, from MV to HPS and now LED, but unless its installing new equipment or replacing something broken, the old stuff stays put.

This area of Texas stood out to me due to their use of clear MV bulbs. Most other places I've seen use phosphor coated bulbs.
