That's another thing we don't see over here, overhead signals strung on wires. We have them on stonking great metal gantries on major roads, but never on wires.

They're probably scared somebody will sue them if one falls off and lands on somebody

I don't disapprove of LED's for domestic and other indoor use, I just don't like them for street lighting.

We usually have hanging wired traffic signal lights dotted across State of Georgia where I live. Sometimes, a strong wind could make the fixture out of position which it needed to be reset by the maintenance people.

Pretty, please no more Chinese failure.

I'm surprised in a litigation-mad country like the US it's so common

Well, our state has lower tax rating. Hence cheaper installation

Pretty, please no more Chinese failure.

Seattle also uses far too many span-mounted traffic signals. It is funny that Seattle will call itself a "World-Class city" but the city is a mess of crooked signals on spans, potholes and homeless people. It is truly embarrassing. We have span mounted signals in the downtown areas!

BTW, these span installs may seem cheaper, but over time they are more expensive, we get trouble calls from these installs all the time. The mast arm stuff goes for decades without issues.

We have very few spanwire instsllatons here. All new installations are mast arms with the signals hardmounted to the masts, so they cannot move. Older mast installations had the signals chained to the mast, so they could still swing around in the wind but the mast itself was sturdy. I like the look of those older mast installations since it looks really nice but annoying when the signals are moving around when you're trying to see the color. Especially with some LED modules, which are rather directional and appear to "turn off" once you're so many degrees out of head-on with it.

I should also add that most of our span wire installations use two wires, the top one is bigger and the signals hang to that along with the wires for the signals. The bottom wire is just for support. The signals are attached to it to keep them from moving around too much. In big storms the wind will snap the lower wire sometimes though.

This is the sort of thing we get here, this is near where I used to live and was on my regular route to and from work.
