Wonderlite self-ballasted mercury plant light

This was the very first self-ballasted mercury lamp I had heard about, in the 1980s, after reading about it in a catalog. It was very expensive, over $60, though I didn't pay anywhere near that for this NOS one. I believe it was made by Westron, but says "Public Service Lamp Company" on the etch & packaging. It's a standard 120v, 160w SMBV reflector lamp as far as I can tell, with a frosted but not phosphored bulb. The manufacturer supposedly added a special ingredient they call "phosphorsol" to the burner to improve the spectrum, but I have no clue what that is. The mercury arc tube looks to be the same color as a standard mercury lamp. Overall the lamp produces poor CRI only slightly better than a clear mercury lamp and that is likely because of the filament. I'll see what the plants think of it though.

Looks like you have medium base skirted cap here. Probably not only made for the medium base, but also mogul base as well

Pretty, please no more Chinese failure.

Interesting! The only self-ballasted flood-shaped mercury lamps I've heard of were the (dangerous) "Sun-lamp" tanning variety.
