70w Sylvania Metalarcs (3000k)

I got 6 of these at Restore for 50C each since I have a lot of 70w MH ballasts but not enough lamps. They are pretty high quality, too. Now, I can't believe I am saying this, but I don't really like these. For one, while 3000k looks great on ceramic lamps, it looks kind of "yucky" on these. They also don't seem that bright compared to my other 70w lamps (a 4000k Plusrite 70w ED28 and a few CMH lamps).

why does it look different from other lamps?

If you mean by light quality, it is kind of pinkish and doesn't really look that good. It also has noticeably lower CRI than my 70w CMH lamps.

Any machine is a smoke machine if you operate it wrong enough.

Yes, much too pink for my taste. I much prefer 4000K in quartz MH. Like you said, CMH lamps in 3000K are really nice. I considered buying some like this on eBay but have always passed.

From what I've seen and understand, these MP Sylvania metalarcs have an extra dose of lithium. The lamp is also driven so that the red 671 nm lithium line is broadened and self-absorbed, much like the sodium 589/590 nm resonance lines, consequently, the color is quite red but I too find them a little pink. Nonetheless, the spectrum seen here is quite fascinating, looking just like a regular Hg-Na-Sc metal-halide lamps but the lithium lines make it distinct. I'm using them hydroponically.

Thanks for the info. How well are they working for grow lights?

Alright, I relamped a floodlight with one of these so we will see how it lasts. I'm curious to know if it will color shift to a cooler color as it ages.

I have not used these long enough to see anything apparent regarding changes in color or benefits for plants. However, see this pic I quickly put together; you'll find the Sylvania Metalarc lithium lamp at center.
