Hmmm...didn't realize that they opened like that. I can see why GE changed the design...future possible contact failures.

Wow! Extremely robust design! Seems like the optical section would be very well sealed too (yet I see a ~1" hole on the side flange of the reflector? lol) Despite all the cool features these early incarnations had, I definitely prefer the more "normal" ones lol. Only thing I really love about these is the serrated/frosted glass. I wish all FCO lights had that! I bet the original ballasts in these were huge!

That hole is where the black cork filter should be.
