Could these CFL here do need an external ballast to make this work?

Pretty, please no more Chinese failure.

Nope, they suck.

Power provider: Southern California Edison (SCE)

-Date decoder of some US lamps 1960-present.
-Switch and receptacle collector.
-I'll save any vintage lamp! Smiley

They do suck, both the flat and mogul base lamps, in the totally enclosed fixture like the one on the shelf, the lamp will get hot and run pathetically dim and greenish in color. Another interesting thing to note, the ballast is actually sort of half in the lamp base and half in the fixture. If you open the plastic base on both the flat "PLM" and mogul lamps, youll find a big capacitor and a small resistor in series with one of the filaments. The ballast in the fixture is about the size of a 26w ballast and will not start standard PL lamps, you are forced to use these particular lamps only

I’d get it, rip the gear out, fit a nice GX24 socket and gear for 1 x 42w PL-T lamp. That’ll be much better than any LED fitting...

If I get a couple I think I may follow your advise and rip out the proprietary stuff as I don't like those weird CFL 4 pin bulbs and related gear.

It takes 65 watts and is dimmer than my 40 watt CFL which pushes 2600 lumens

The housings on these are of decent quality, the gear inside is absolute sh!t and should be properly disposed of should you get one. They are really dim (not much brighter than a 100w incandescent in fact) and they only last about a year in my experience.

Any machine is a smoke machine if you operate it wrong enough.

One house near me put in a Lithonia area light that takes that bulb. It has the plastic bowl shaped refractor. So far it is working ok a few months later. I haven't seen these floods at HD here, but they recently put the area lights back out for sale, even though they had disappeared when the CFL, MH and HPS area lights were removed from the display.

Collect vintage incandescent and fluorescent fixtures. Also like HID lighting and streetlights.

They are pushing out the CFL stuff and CFL proprietary bulbs at the Home Depot(s) here...the HPS, MH and MV bulbs are all still in stock in various wattages however I don't believe any of those fixtures are carried any longer.

Yeah they still have all those bulbs here but the HID fixtures all went away in January. I missed out on the clearance if there was any. They all just disappeared.
