Ledvance/Sylvania F40T12/930 US made failing after 30 min JUNK

Ledvance/Sylvania F40T12/930 US made failing after 30 min JUNK

I was working in the garage. I looked, both tubes were still warming up after a few minutes. 10 min later, tube on right was at full brightness. But the tube on left was rapidly losing light and turning red and dim. Means one thing: Vacuum loss. Not a good way to conclude production at Versailles KY.

I had a lady hire me to fix her closet light. It's a hpf f40 rapid start strip. She said the old bulbs were dim and flickery so she bought new ones and the fixture wouldn't work at all.

So I figured the ballast was shot. However, I took bulbs out of another working light and they worked in the fixture in question! So I tried the new bulbs in the 2nd fixture. Nothing. Turns out BOTH brand new lamps were defective! GE f40 5000k twin pack from lowes. I ended up selling her a pair of nos red etch GE SP30 watt miser lamps for the price she bought the lowes lamps for. I figured the 34w tubes would start easier in case the ballast was a little weak.

That is how some of my Canadian Ledvance tubes look every time they start up. The Warm white GE from USA does this also. Only tubes that didnt give me trouble were the Philips supreme. I dreaded this day would come where domestically made tubes were chinese quality

When you're a factory worker at a dying plant and you know you're losing your job this is what happens.

That'd be cool if somebody can buy the plant and somehow fix and up it's quality.

Sad. Is Danvers still open or are they going to Canada or China?

Pretty sure the manufacturing process for these tubes is just about fully automated. Theres probably not a ton of people losing their jobs from it. Any job lost is not a good thing though, of course.

Danvers has been closed since '98. Drummondville, Canada, closed last year. They could source lamps from GE or Philips.

You see what happens when the Chinese take over American and European manufacturers?

May all the great lighting technologies have their place in history.

Seems like Sylvania also has had mercury shortage issues going back to Osram acquisition and EPact in the early 90's.

Yeah Sylvania lamps have been hit or miss for a long time now. It's nothing new, though I feel like it's getting worse. Seems like in the past there were more good lamps than bad.

I have a couple of Sylvania F15T8/DSW lamps that are dim in the middle right after startup. Within a few minutes they're at normal brightness along the whole tube.
