Good Luck ! As for "is it worth it?" It depend on what voltage they are, How many actually work, and most importantly, what you pay for them. I've bought stuff like this for less than 1/2 the scrap value before . Regardless weather I sold some and kept the rest, scrapped some or all, I was making money.

I'm sure all of them probably work, a few might need new capacitors though. I would just hope they aren't 480v only or something.

Any machine is a smoke machine if you operate it wrong enough.

If they are 480V, you will be stuck with a pile of aluminum. IMO

You should be able to get these cheap,
With all the led upgrades going on nowadays
They would almost have to pay someone to haul these off
Because Sadly HID lighting is a thing of the past, And these fixtures might be from an led upgrade,

You may want to bring some tools with You to open some up and see the power specs before the auction,

Just don't get "Auctionitis" while you are bidding....as Tim says, know the scrap die cast ally value and don't bid much over that.

Chances are they will all be from the same site and thus probably the same voltage....will they let you open one and look at the gear prior to the auction so you can get a guist of the voltage?

Cool that they have multi tap ballasts are they Quad tap (120/208/240/277) or dual tap (120/277V)?
For 55 fixtures $200 is not a bad buy.

I wish it was easier to get fixtures that are being replaced with LED garbage but most of them are scrapped or destroyed during the removal process (letting the pole fall or just ripping the fixture off the wall with a pry bar, etc)

You are doing pretty much what I would do, keep a few, take the lamps and gear from the rest and take the castings to scrap for money back.

The only issue is the low purchase price which may discourage potential sellers from doing it again rather than going directly to scrap.

Here in Hobart one of our bigger scrap metal dealers actually has an on site "shop" where they put stuff they believe they can sell for more than scrap value...and they encourage people to come in and look. If you see stuff in the scrap heap you are interested in, they will also get it out for you.....it is a win-win situation.

I guess that it's a good deal being that they're multi volt. Personally, I don't care for shoebox luminaires, due to there lack of versatility. I prefer something with a slip fitter...a lot more fun to 'play' with.

Your mission - should you choose to accept it - is to save unique and rare HID lighting before it's all scrapped.

The one fixture that I could not stand and still cannot is the Wal-Mart Gardco and LSI shoebox fixtures.

Did you get it?

Don't be fooLED, T8 IS the worst thing to do to a magnetic T12 fixture.
