From what I can see this is a classic "CFL" circuit with a self-running half bridge. I'm not sure how well would that work for a HID lamp as acoustic resonance could be a problem.

I have a piece of this type ballast too. The schematic is almost the same as the one used in cheaper CFL ballasts, except for the ignitor part, instead the resonant L-C network of this one uses a thyristor that periodically discharges a capacitor through the primary of the igniting transformer, that functions as the current-limiting inductor after igniting. Once I've drawn back the schematic, so here you are: http://bth-amps.uw.hu/unitor35w.jpg Points "KI1" and "KI2" are the outputs.
