Awesome PL installation from the 80s!

Awesome PL installation from the 80s!

Click to view full size image

Had passed by this installation many times and remember them when I was a little kid. These were installed in an estate agent's shop in the 80s presumably, when "energy saving" was all the rage and CFLs were just about coming on to the market. Presumably the ballasts are hidden in the ceiling? I have never seen an installation like this ever!

Very interesting! They look like 11w PL and Philips lamps. The ballast will be in the ceiling. I'd love to see them start up!

Awesome lights! I agree that the start up must be really cool, especially if these are preheat.

I like all kinds of lighting and electrical, especially HIDs and street lights!

Interesting, reminds me of a shoe store I saw in 1997-1998 that has PLs sticking out of recessed cans designed for incandescent. It had a really similar look to this.

This is one of the most unusual, interesting, and COOLEST installations I've ever seen! I love it!

I share your thoughts on this one too! It would be a real pity if they ripped these out for LED, luckily 2 pin PL lamps are still widely available.

Are there any other installations like this in your area? I'm just completely fascinated with this one!
I can't even handle the thought of this being changed to LED. All I can say is thanks for posting this one!

I'm not sure. I vaguely remember a bar that had a similar installation but that must have been at least 10 years ago so it might not be there. Even if it is I have no idea where it was.

I used to travel a lot, and I've seen these installs in Spain and Portugal in the late 90's. I also recall in Portugal they'd install 2D lamps in the open like this also.

Places in China used to do this also until the early 2000's when spiral CFL's began to become more prevalent.
