Dead LED

Dead LED

Click to view full size image

This wasn't a very respectful thing to do to a light, but the enclosure of the solar light that this came out of literally crumbled apart when I opened it to change a bad battery...so I had developed an appetite for destruction. Water had already made it past the seals into the lamp housing, so I finished these guys off with a 9V battery. Within about a 5-second time frame, they went from bright white to dim blue, then burned out sequentially, leaving the final LED (on top) glowing orange, then red, then releasing the magic smoke :) (I tried to video it, but it didn't come out well).

I've seen that happen before. Usually the result of overdriving. My blue Ledtronics cluster bulb is still running after over 10 years of nearly continuous use. However, some of the LED's are starting to dim. The colored LED's aren't so bad. The white ones, however, are notorious for lumen deprecation.

As for the "magic smoke" I've heard jokes that electronics contain it...when it's released they're dead!
