Metal Halide at EOL

Metal Halide at EOL

Click to view full size image

One of the MARTA's finest lighting system that is showing Mercury starved Metal Halide. This one is burning 24/7/365 up to the picture I snapped. The only left that is burning is the halide salts. This one was replaced around mid-2005 after the original clear Metal Halide was burned out.

The picture is not up to par since I took it with my phone camera.

I was wondering what makes them go 'pink'. Metal halide is interesting. When the lamps age, sometimes there's no telling what can happen....a severe color shift to blue-green or pink, sudden arctube rupture, or just start cycling and flickering until complete failure. Others simply fail to start one day.

Larger Fred Meyer stores used to be lit by metal halide pendants with coated lamps. I'd often notice them turn this color and run that way for around a week before finally going out.

Those fixtures have since been replaced by 6-lamp F32T8 high bay fixtures, and lamp failures are more frequent now.

Probestart and rarely pulse-start Na-Sc MH lamps, tends to go pink at EOL, because the scandium lost from the arctube while the sodium remains inside.

Please forgive me if my choice of my words looks like offensive, while that isn't my intention.

I only working with the European date format (dd.mm.yyyy).

I lives in Israel, which is a 230-240V, 50hz country.

As I mentioned that this picture was from my phone camera, in reality, the color was orange.

@Update: The light finally extinguished yesterday (2011-3-31). Probably it happened during power interruption at that night.

Pretty, please no more Chinese failure.

I have several Probe start MH lamps and one Pulse of various wattages, that'll be cool if they turn red before EOL For now they are not in service

This looks like a leaking MH lamp. It only glows a dim pink. Only now I've see this.

I think it is quartz capsule. Probably depleted Mercury into the arc tube Probably what's left is the Sodium salt is still vaporising.

Pretty, please no more Chinese failure.
