F14T12 running on low voltage DC

F14T12 running on low voltage DC

Just a little experiment I thought I would try. I connected a 32 volt power supply, a 15 volt power supply, and a 13 volt power supply in series to give an OCV of about 60 volts, and a 150 watt incandescent lamp was used as the ballast. The lamp was manually preheated. Oddly, if you preheat the lamp for a good couple of seconds, it wouldn't strike at all, but if you preheat for just a split second, it will strike. I assume this is because the quicker preheating allows the lamp to strike before the incandescent ballast heats up and raises in resistance.

The anode side of the lamp had a noticeable dark spot, but no sign of mercury migration occurred after an hour of running. Wasn't the F14T12 developed for running on DC power from streetcars and such?

Can you run two F14T12 in series on 120v? What type of starters would work?

Yep! Two plain old FS-2 starters do the trick.

You can also run two f20s in series on a single lamp f40 ballast with a fair OCV.
