F6T5 and F8T5 running in series on incandescent ballast on 120V

Total arc voltage is 104V. The arc is slightly unstable, but it hasn't extinguished in several hours of running. A 40 watt bulb allows 0.15A. Preheat current is 0.24A, which is a little high.

Cool experiment. I wouldn't have guessed these would stay lit like that. I've heard that the rule is arc voltage can't exceed 2/3 of open voltage. But, I think when a cap is in series, the rules change a bit...that's why a 40w can run on a 120v choke if a cap is in series like those older LOA shop lights.

Thanks. Yep, 2/3 OCV is the rule with a single lamp. With multiple lamps in series, however, the rule changes to around 5/6 OCV. I guess because the total arc is spread across four cathodes, instead of the current trying to jump all the way across a single set of two cathodes.
